One Room Challenge: Spring 2015 ~ Week 2

Welcome back to Week 2 of the One Room Challenge. I had such a good time last week checking out all the creative plans for rooms. (You can see mine here.) And thanks to everyone who left the great encouraging comments. I just love how those that are a part of the ORC are always so supportive of one another.

I had about fifteen minutes yesterday and decided to play around on Polyvore. I quickly formed an idea for how I want to style the table placed in front of  the steps. It will be the first thing you see when you walk in the house, so it needs to look good, but still be functional as a place to drop the mail or place my keys.

Most of the items I already have around the house. Only thing I really need to come up with is the artwork. I do plan to make a cute art project using maps. More on that later.

Now I have a dilemma and need some advice. I am trying to decide what carpet to put on the stairs. I am leaning towards a colorful rug runner like this.

But then I start to second guess myself.

One side says, a rug with a fun pattern will add  style to the entryway. I love color, but the rest of my house is tending to be on the neutral and dare I say safe side when it comes to decorating. A colorful rug on the stairs with add some pop to the room.

DIY Stair Runner with 30$ rugs. What an amazing idea.

But the other side worries, that when we do sell this house (which will be a few years, but is inevitable) this would limit the type of buyer. They might look at the stairs and walk out the door. Also, it would be harder to decorate around it if later on I decide to change things up. Plus, keeping it neutral is the safe way to go.

I like both ways, and see the benefits of either style. So what do you all think! Which way would you go. Colorful or neutral rug for the stairs?

  1. I have the hardest time committing to color and pattern in my own home too... I love both neutral and pattern! Can't wait to see what you decide on!! It will look great either way!

  2. I am excited to follow along and see your progress as I am doing my foyer too! I am making progress but have not yet found a rug or a light fixture that I can commit too!

  3. Hello from another daytime STEM by day, blogger by night!

I have such a hard time doing anything because of my fear about future buyers (which is particularly insane since I have no plans to sell), but I'm risk adverse!

  4. I say follow your heart and choose what YOU love. You can't decorate your house for the future buyer ;) A blogger wrote a great post on this once - wish I remembered who it was! Both options are beautiful - you really can't go wrong! Looking forward to following along!

  5. I agree with what others are saying. I think you need to decide what YOU like best. Awhile ago, we sold a house and the kitchen was a deep red (something I liked at the time, but probably wouldn't choose now). When we went to sell the house, our Realtor suggested we paint the kitchen a neutral color, but we didn't have time before it went on the market. The third people that came to see the house bought it and told our Realtor they just loved the red paint color in the kitchen.

  6. You foyer is beautiful, I love all the millwork! If you are keeping everything the same color I think it already makes a very neutral statement. Adding color in the runner I don't think would be a mistake, staying neutral might, unless it is the sisal runner to add texture. I would not worry if future buyers would like the stair runner, go with what you like. A replacement would not break the bank. The big ticket item is neutral, the walls.

  7. Loving your inspiration photos! I would say if you ARE thinking of selling in a few years, to go neutral on the runner. I love the pattern and color of your inspiration photos but like you said it may not be someone else's choice. If you aren't really planning on moving in the next 5 years, I say go bold with what you love!

  8. I love the idea of a colorful runner, but I would probably go neutral in my own home. Good luck with your decision!

  10. I love the antelope, the stripes and the sisal - I think all three count as neutral! :) I think the runner is going to look amazing. We have these way funky stairs that the bottom half of the stairs, the stairs are really wide and then get narrower as they go up. I think the builder meant for it to look grand and it so doesn't. One of my least favorite features of our house. I'm totally jealous of your runner doable stairs! Can't wait to see what you choose.

  11. The stripes and the antelope are my favorite. A bigger pattern on the stairs would be a lot for me, but I play it too safe sometimes myself! Do what will make you happy in your house!

  12. A runner on the stairs seems like an easy fix for future buyers so I definitely agree that you should pick what's best for you but if you're asking for a vote I like the stripes! Stripes are so classic and never go out of style, perhaps, stripes in a neutral color is the best of bold worlds; you get some pop of a pattern but not SO bold that you potentially scare away future buyers.

  13. We talk about the unknown future buyer of our house a lot too always taking them into consideration on decor choices until one day when I decided to stop trying to please them and start trying to please myself. Its too hard to know the preferences of someone you haven't met. And if I am your future buyer I'd love a chic antelope pattern in a neutral color or a neutral pattern likes stripes in a rich classic color. Anyway, even the definition of "neutral" changes in decor ... think about how beige / tan walls have lost favor to all the gray tones. Just something to think about!

  15. I say go for what YOU love!!! I think we have to all stop making decisions based on what "they" might think! Can't wait to see what you decide!
