One Room Challenge - Spring 2014 : Week One

It's One Room Challenge Time!

Last Fall I participate by redoing my Laundry Room with a nod to Dorothy Draper and the Greenbrier.

This year I will be using this picture as my inspiration image.

But I am not redoing a living room. It's the color scheme from this picture  that really drew me in. The use of primary colors is done in such a way that it doesn't look like a crayon box, but much more sophisticated. That is what I hope to replicate for this One Room Challenge when I redo my....

Mud Room.

Here are the before pictures, so you can get a layout of the room. It's a small room, filled with windows, added to the back of the house at some point in my house's long 80 year history.

Big disaster right! This is the room where we, for the most part, always exit and enter the house. And I hate looking at this dumping ground everyday!

There are a few good things about the room. The bench (if it was actually useable) is a perfect place to sit to take off your shoes. The navy storage shelf could be great if it was better utilized. But my favorite part of the room, and the only part that is actually working right now, is the white cubbies that stores my kids jackets and book bags. So these few things will stay.

Over the course of six weeks, my big goal will be to get this room organized. There is so much potential for this space, but at the moment it is just buried under a bunch of stuff. I learned when maintaining my laundry room, that if you designate a place for something, it will be much more likely to be return there. So there will be some labeling involved. Another goal is to re-doing this room as low cost as I can yet still keep it looking chic, meaning a lot of DIYs and trips to Target. Since this is my kid's domain, it is not the place to put the high end items....trust me.

Also, I want to incorporate the color scheme from my inspiration room into the Mud Room by adding colorful storage boxes, a new carpet, and upgrading the accessories. I've been adding to a Pinterest board for the past few months and have a few good thought for where I will go with the room. But we will see if all of those ideas can be incorporated by the end of this One Room Challenge.

Well it is Spring Break for us here, so off to spend some time with the family....And on Monday I will  get back to working on this Mud Room!
