Collect Blue and White Art

Vincent van Gogh. The Starry Night. Saint Rémy, June 1889

The first art I ever acquired was a poster of Starry Night complete with Von Gogh in big block letters on the bottom. I put it on my college dorm room wall with poster putty. I thought I was being so sophisticated by picking a masterpiece to display in my space.

A few year later, after purchasing our first house, I found my next art piece. It was a reproduction of a vintage poster advertising French wine.  I think I bought it at Bed, Bath and Beyond. The color scheme of the piece started my temporary, but deep, obsession with the color scheme green, yellow and red. I happily decorated the bedroom in these colors to complement this art hanging prominently on the wall. (This time it was in a frame, and attached to the wall by hanging on a nail...see, I was moving up in the world.)

While these early pieces of artwork still have a fondness in my heart, as I moved towards my thirties, I decided I needed to have "real" art work. I wanted to purchase art that was created by someone, and not a mass-produced reproduction. It almost felt like this would show I was moving to a new stage in my life...at least a new house decorating stage.

About the time I made this decision, I happened to be volunteering at an art fair. I walked by a booth, and I swear a beam of light shone on one of the pictures, directing me to look at it. (Ok, I am exaggerating, but I was really taken with the piece.) The artist told me how she took a Polaroid picture, and before it completely dried, swirled the image around with a stick pen. I had luckily stuck a twenty dollar bill in my pocket that morning, and that bought me the smallest print she had.

My next big art purchase was from an artist I found on Ebay. (I know still not such an adult that I would actually go into a gallery.) The painting he had listed reminded me of what the forest near my childhood home looks like in that early morning time just before the sun rises. Once again I fell hard. I needed it in a bigger size than what was listed to fit the space in my living room. After an email exchange, the artist agreed to custom make something for a price that was almost the same price as the couch that would be beneath it. As someone who just a few years before, thought that decorating with a poster was high times, the cost was a bit of a struggle for me to come to terms with. But after thinking about it for a while, I finally commissioned the painting. I am so glad I did. The painting still makes me feel calm and happy whenever I look at it, all these years (and a new house) later.

Fast forward a few years, and we have now moved a few times since I decided to work on my small art collection. Our new home needed something for the back wall of our dining area. I asked my dad, a professional photographer, if I could have some of his pictures to display.  I waited a few months, after all the paying customers come first, but finally pictures of flowers arrived. I love that my dad autographed them, and they look great in the room. And of course I was glad that blue and while flowers where included.

I continue to look for art that speaks to me. I wonder when my next find will appear!

Do you have a favorite piece of art in your home? How did you come across it?

Do you notice how I subconsciously gravitate to the color blue? Do you have a certain color that catches your eye?

If you want to see more ways to use that color, be sure to head on over to The Pink Pagoda and the Blue and White Bash. Also, be sure to check out Jennifer's Etsy store. She has beautiful prints that would look great in any room.

One Room Challenge with Calling it Home: Week One

For the next several weeks, I am a participating in the One Room Challenged hosted by Linda on her great blog Calling It Home. Be sure to stop by each Thursday to see how my room progresses.

We moved into are smallish (great charm, great location) 1920's house almost 2 years ago. In the rush to get everyone settled in, I just put things into rooms where they would fit. Now that we have lived in the house for awhile, and I have a better feel for how we are using the space, I am slowly organizing and decorating one room at a time. For this One Room Challenge, I wanted to work on the room that currently bothers me the most. I figure this would keep me accountable, and I would get the job done without letting that little thing called life get in the way.

I chose the Laundry Room.

I HATE doing laundry. And yes, if you really think about it, washing clothes in this modern day and age is not really that hard. But it is just so tedious to me, and there are so many other things I would rather be doing. I decided if I had a pretty room. It might inspire me to not dread it so much.

I also wanted a really bold space. Our laundry room is in our basement, so for the most part only the family I see it. I thought this would be the perfect spot to step out of my normal decorating style and really have fun with it. Plus, I live in a boy filled world...2 sons and a husband...even the dog is a boy. I needed at least one room in the house to have a touch of pink!

So it was off to find inspiration....

Growing up, we would visit the Greenbrier Resort, and I was inspired there by the decorating style of Dorothy Draper (I talk more about her here.) I decided the laundry room would greatly benefit from her bold style.

Here is another room by her protégé Carleton Varney. I love the pattern and color combination in this room.

These stripes are the best! This room was designed by Mary McDonald. I always admire her use of color in any room she decorates.

I am in love with this trellis wallpaper. I have to have it for my room.

Are you seeing a theme yet?

So I put together an inspiration board of my ideas for what the room will look like.

And I wrote out a list to plan my room redo...

-Tile floor
-Decorate walls (wallpaper or stencil?)
-Get great fabric to make curtains.
-Organize cleaning supplies.
-Add decoration.

Here is the before. The room can only go up from here!

Creat a Light, Airy, and a Little Different Fall Wreath

I am so excited to share the wreath I made...with help from my son. I wanted something that was light, airy, and a little different than the typical wreath. I think I definitely met those requirements with this one.

First, I went to my local craft store and picked out decorative fall branches and a roll of burlap ribbon.

I started to form the bottom wire part of the yellow branches into a circular shape, but I couldn't get it to stay right. My son told me that I should use a pipe cleaner, and he made one into a circle for me. It gave me the base I needed to create the wreath. Sometimes, he is smarter than his mother!

I actually tore apart the beaded branches, and used them as individual strains. The beaded branches weren't looking right clumped together, and I wanted them spaced all around the wreath.

Next up was covering up the center pipe cleaner. I wrapped the striped burlap ribbon around the middle, securing it at the ends with a little hot glue. It gave just enough structure to hold all the parts of the wreath in place.

I was actually quite pleased with the finished product...and admittedly a little surprised that it all turned out! I quickly hung it on the wall to snap a picture.

Then it was time to try it out on the front door.

I actually hated it there. The large door knocker looked too clunky for such a delicate wreath. I also tried placing the wreath above and below the knocker, but it just didn't look right on the door. I was getting a little frustrated to say the least.

Then inspiration hit me. I hung it on a nail that was already between the window and the door. It was like it was meant to be.

The fall wreath is a great improvement to the décor on my front porch.

Improve the House List

I mentioned here about the current state of my house. It's a mess. So I made a plan to improve the house. I hope to spend about 1-2 weeks on each room, but we will see...life has a nasty habit of getting in the way sometimes.

So this is the plan...

Boy's Room
-Clean up closet
-Tidy desk
-Identify out-grown clothing

Master Bedroom
-Get rid of piles of papers
-Order new TV stand
-Get accessories to decorate the room
-De-clutter the closets
-Find art for the room

Living Room
-Make slip covers for the couch and chairs

Mudroom
-Get rid of the clutter
-Designate space for everything
-Tidy up the kid's cubbies
-Organize toys/bags/sports equipment

Kitchen
-Make curtains
-Clean out cabinets
-Organize pantry
-Find designated place for mail and other paperwork
-Edit pencils and pens
-Clean out bins of paper

Dining Area
-Add new light fixture and buffet table

Family room
-De-clutter all toys
-Organize desk area
-Decide what board games are really played with
-Add any needed decorations
-Put pictures back up

Wow that is a long list! But I need to do it. I am keeping my focus on how great my house will look once I am done.  It will be so organize that I will know where everything is at all times! A girl can dream. I will keep everyone updated as I progress.

I can't wait to start checking off these boxes.

Clean Up My House

Via

My house is officially a mess. Some of this is due to the formerly relaxed pace of summer and to the current hectic life that the start of school creates. But mostly it is due to laziness on my part! I let mail to be sorted stack up for a few days, put the kid's many toys in a corner of their room instead of the bins designated for them that are two floors down, or let laundry pile up because by the end of the day I am just tired.

But while in the short term this "putting it off till tomorrow" mentality gets me what I really need (i.e. sleep), in the long term I look around my cluttered, disorganized house and feel STRESS.

So I am making a list...did you expect anything else...detailing all the steps I need to do to get my house under control. My first impulse is to spend several days working round the clock and just get it done. But then I remember that I have work, kids activities, and sleep that I need to fit into my schedule, so I know I won't be able to give such a large chunk of my time. Also, I keep telling myself that Rome was not built in a day, and neither will my house be perfect in the same amount of time. I am putting the finishing touches on my plan and will share it with you tomorrow.

Share a Project: Pretty Organized

Today, I am very excited to be a featured reader on the great blog Pretty Organized. Check out it out here.

We recently moved into a new house. It has 1920's charm and a great location, but it is lacking in extra space. To make this house work, I need to keep it organized.

The first project I had to tackle was the storage in our bathroom. In the mad dash to unpack, at first, I just shoved everything that belonged in the bathroom into the cabinet under the sink. As a result, I had to spend time everyday trying to find what I needed. (I tried to take a good before picture, but things kept falling out.)

The first step was going through everything in the cabinet and throwing out what I didn't need. This was not easy for me, but I made myself toss whatever I had not touched in 6 months. It was surprising how much stuff fell into this category.

Then it was time to organize what was left. I decided because I didn't have much width in the cabinet under the sink, I needed to take advantage of the vertical space available. It was off to shop. I looked and looked for shelving that would fit in the space inside the cabinet, but I couldn’t find anything that was just right…I felt a little like Goldilocks. Then, it dawned on me that I could repurpose a shower caddie.

They were just the right size to fit in the cabinet. After purchasing two of them, I put them on either side of the cabinet. I now had a total of 4 shelves to arrange all the bottles and other small items I needed to store in the bathroom…one side for my things and the other for my husband’s items.

I still needed to fit larger items like a hairdryer, but those pesky pipes still posed a problem. I was able to fit a basket in the open space, and fill it with the larger items.

I love how well the project turned out. Now I can easily and quickly find everything I need. It was a great improvement to my bathroom.

Paint Garage-Sell-Find Lamps

When I was a kid I always liked to do the puzzles on the Sunday comics page of my local newspaper. My favorite was the one that compared two pictures, and you had to pick out the differences. So here is that same kind of puzzle. Can you tell the difference between the two pictures? Keep reading for the answer.

I promised in yesterday's post, about painting the green dressers, that I would give more information about the lamps. A few weeks ago, I just happened to drive by a garage sell in my neighborhood, and I saw two lamps sitting at the end of the driveway.

I bought them for a great price, and then immediately took the lamp shades to a local donation/thrift store. They were not my taste at all, and they were HUGE. I wish now I had taken a picture, but they were this big...

The actual lamps had an interesting shape, and I liked the Greek Key design. The brass finish though was very worn, and needed to be painted over. Following this tutorial, I used this spray paint...

And yes, it was primer. The paint finish on the dressers, that the lamps were going to sit on, was so shiny that I actually wanted a more matte finish on the lamps. The primer delivered that, although it did take two coats of paint and a few touch ups.

I am now a convert to spray paint! It was so fast and easy. Why did I ever use a brush before?

Now did you spot the difference in the two pictures? When I put the first lamp I finished on the dresser, I realized why the original lamp shades were so large. The top part of the lamp was very long and threw off the proportions of a normal-size lampshade.

My husband offered to try to fix it. At first, there was some excited talk from him that he might have to use a sledgehammer. I think he was disappointed when he just had to disconnect the wire off of  the top that holds the light bulb, and pull off the long narrow piece of the lamp.

I was very impressed with how it looked when he finished. This was such a small change, but it was a great improvement to the lamps.

Make More Storage in my Bedroom: Dressers as Nightstands

I finally finished a project that I worked on for a couple months now. Actually, I worked on it for a weekend two months ago, then life happened, it sat in my garage for awhile gathering cobwebs, and then I dedicated to dedicate all of this Saturday to getting it done. I am so glad that I carved out the time, because I think it looks great!

This was my inspiration photo. It was in Lonny magazine several months ago. As soon as I saw this picture, I knew it was just the pop of color I needed for my bedroom.

At first I thought I would paint the dresser we already had, but that furniture wasn't really working for us in our bedroom anyway. Our master bedroom is on the small side, and a bit of an odd shape...more long and narrow.  When we moved into our house, we weren't able to fit our second large dresser. As a result, most of our clothes were in a small chest of dresser. I felt like I was constantly shoving things back in just to get the drawers to close. I needed more storage.

Then I saw this picture on another blog, Little Green Notebook, and got an idea. We had a small nightstand beside our bed. I realized if we upsized it to an actual dresser it would be a much better use of the space, provide needed storage, and I would still have a place beside my bed to put my book at night.

Here are a few more inspiration pictures, from other sources, of dressers used as nightstands:

I did a lot of measuring and a lot of looking. Most of the dressers I found and liked were too big for the small space I was working with. Finally, the Tarva dresser from Ikea was the perfect fit.

I painted it Par Three from Ace Hardware.

I found the drawer pulls on Ebay for about a third of the price of what I was looking at elsewhere.  The person I bought them from also has an Etsy store called Lakeway Candles. They were very helpful and responsive to my order.

So here is the finished dresser.

I moved about half my clothes into the dresser, and it is working out great. There is a matching dresser on the other side of the bed for my husband's things. The extra storage is such an improvement to the bedroom.

I will tell you all more about the lamps in tomorrow's post.....

Reveal the After Photos: Boy's Bedroom

I am very excited to share the "after" photos of my boy's bedroom.

.

The chevron rug that I talked about in yesterday's post, definitely was a good addition to the space. Once I saw it in person, it took me a little bit of time to get use to all that zig zag movement in the rug. Of course, it is mostly covered with toys now anyway, so it doesn't bother me as much.

This was the dresser that I already had, and matched with the wood finish of the bunk bed. The pictures above show off my two boy's different personalities.

The boys love to collect maps from the different places they have been. We have maps from zoos, amusement parks, museums, and even of our hometown that cover one wall of the room.

I hope you enjoy seeing the room, and might find some of your own inspiration for improvements.
